Which one is closer?

Do you have a Lowe's card for 5% off?

Thats The only differences in plants that I've noticed.

Lowe's seems to have a much deeper selection and definitely better quality. Home Depot has a lot of plants but fewer varieties than Lowe's. The Lowe's near me has as good of a selection as the independents near by.

Agree about Lowe's for the wider selection and overall health of the plants.

Lowes is a mile closer and doesn't require me to make a left hand turn in the face of 4 lanes of opposing traffic without the benefit of a stop light.

And the local nursery is 3 blocks down from Lowes, again on the right side of the street before I get to HD. So whatever HD has I'll never see it.

Lowe's sells clearance plants while it's my understanding that Home Depot either tosses out plants they can't sell or maybe they send them back - either way, you can get some pretty good deals at Lowe's as soon as a plant stops flowering or if it just needs some extra TLC the employees can't provide (I grabbed a large rhododendron last year for only $14 Memorial Day weekend because the pink flowers were starting to naturally fall off). I prefer to go to Lowe's just to check the clearance section first. I think selection depends on the size of the store at either site -- the Lowe's close to me is mehhhh but the one about 30 minutes north is awesome.

It seems like each store is different. My local HD has a horrible selection (compared to local Lowe's) though they did start carrying cacti from a different vendor recently. There are pics from redditors in others areas with a much larger and varies plant selection. Different regions will carry a different selection of plants too.

In my town, Lowe's tends to have more space dedicated to annuals. Home Depot has more shrubs. Otherwise, they're about the same.

they both are moderately sucky and you have to really do the research for plants that are appropriate for your area. Also a LOT of them don't bother to water the plants adequately since they can return the plants for a refund, so you're very likely to get a stressed plant that is more likely to either die or succumb to pests and diseases. A independent local gardening center will be infinitely better but will probably not be as cheap as the box stores.

thank you for that. but the question is comparing the 2. pros and cons for each.. ya know? if you didnt have a local nursery which store would you use most and why?

level 1

Neither. Local nurserys will always have better quality as it's how they compete. You'll also be putting money back into your community and not into the hands of some random wealthy shareholders.

level 2

Not everyone who has a stake in a company like Lowes or HD is wealthy. There are also people who live in your community that likely have a stake in the companies through retirement plans and mutual funds. Plus all of the employees at Lowes or HD pay taxes and spend their money in your community. Lowe's and Home Depot supply to many local businesses on the commercial side of the operation, too. The stores also pay local taxes. Shop local, that's great (or don't), but to say that the money you spend at Home Depot or Lowes only goes to some wealthy stock holder is not at all accurate.
